چکیده

Abstract Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate are the primary neurotransmitters responsible for modulating excitatory inhibitory signalling within human brain. Dysfunctional GABAergic glutamatergic has been identified as a key factor in range of neuropsychiatric conditions; hence measurement modulation these neurometabolites is important improving our understanding conditions treatment options. Gabapentin (GBP) one several drugs developed to increase GABA levels routinely prescribed such epilepsy neuralgia. While animal studies indicate that GBP can elevate levels, its exact mechanisms action not fully understood, although does have direct effect upon receptors. To investigate impact acute administration motor system we used two complimentary approaches – transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) resonance spectroscopy (MRS). MRS TMS measures repeatedly found be uncorrelated likely reflect different pools synaptic extra GABA, hence, measuring both same participants allows an in-depth assessment effects. Despite significantly increased ratings fatigue tiredness group, failed find any statistically significant changes or GABA. Measures Glutamate (glu) glutamine (gln) were also affected by GBP. These findings they run counter previous work, suggest dose subject substantial individual variation, with timing particularly observed implications use dosing means explore function health disease.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in delirium: A double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled, pilot study

Purpose: Delirium is a fatal but potentially reversible disorder of Central Nervous System that adds a lot of costs on health systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of intermittent theta burst stimulation on severity and course of delirium. Methods: This was a double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled, pilot study. The participants were randomly allocated into two groups of ...

Right prefrontal repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

OBJECTIVE The efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the right prefrontal cortex for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) was studied under double-blind, placebo-controlled conditions. METHOD Patients were randomly assigned to 18 sessions of real (N=10) or sham (N=8) rTMS. Treatments lasted 20 minutes, and the frequency was 1 Hz for both conditions, bu...

Efficacy of Tinospora cordifolia on Learning and Memory in Healthy Volunteers: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo Controlled Study

Background. Tinospora cordifolia, an Indian medicinal plant, has been reported to have beneficial effects on disorders like peptic ulcer, hepatobiliary disorders, rheumatism, infectious diseases etc. It enhances cognition in normal rats and successfully overcomes cyclosporine induced memory deficit. Methods. Thirty healthy volunteers of age 18-30 years received Tinospora cordifolia (500 mg of p...

Effects of lacosamide and carbamazepine on human motor cortex excitability: A double-blind, placebo-controlled transcranial magnetic stimulation study

PURPOSE Lacosamide (LCM) and carbamazepine (CBZ) are antiepileptic drugs both acting on neuronal voltage-gated sodium channels. Patch-clamp studies demonstrated significant differences in how LCM and CBZ affect neuronal membrane excitability. Despite valuable information patch-clamp studies provide, they also comprise some constraints. For example, little is known about effects of LCM on intrac...

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in posttraumatic stress disorder: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

OBJECTIVE The efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the right prefrontal cortex was studied in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) under double-blind, placebo-controlled conditions. METHOD Twenty-four patients with PTSD were randomly assigned to receive rTMS at low frequency (1 Hz) or high frequency (10 Hz) or sham rTMS in a double-blind design. Tre...
